As I said when I started the column, my aim is to give coverage to local athletes who often don't get any, to enhance the Hamden sports community, and to recognize former athletes.
I hope you find me on the blog, and remember, any info you can send me will be greatly appreciated.
TIEBREAKER SYSTEM
The Southern Connecticut Conference will likely introduce a tie-breaker system for regular season games. The SCC is the last conference in the state to introduce a tie breaker system. The coaches have already voted in favor and now it must be passed by the athletic directors committee.
If it passes, the system to be used will be the "Kansas tie breaker." The ball will be placed on the 10 yard line and the offense may score in any way. The opposition then takes over on the 10 yard line. The team with the most points at the end of the alternating possessions wins. If the score is tied, they start the system over until there is a winner.
As I have stated many times before, I am against any system that uses an artificial means to get a score.
MIDDLE SCHOOL BASEBALL FIELD
Mark Albanese, Director of Facilities for the Hamden Board of Education, tells me "the topography is being reviewed by the architects and the town officials to see if it meets the original design specifications."
According to DEP requirements, the field had to be built so that water drained into the subterranean drainage system and away from the brook.
KRISTIN REGAN -- ONE OF HAMDEN'S FINEST
The last time I saw Kristin Regan she was a munchkin fielding ground balls and chasing fly balls for my Little League team which her brother played on. Even then she carried herself like an athlete and was destined for fame.
At Hamden Middle School, Regan played softball and soccer and was named the Sports Federation Female Athlete of the Year. She was recruited by several prep schools and attended the Loomis-Chafee School in Windsor, Connecticut
At Loomis she earned eleven varsity letters in four years. In her senior year she captained field hockey, softball and ice hockey.
Regan was recruited by over 30 schools before she settled on Boston College. She will play ice hockey in 2008-09 for head coach Katie King and assistant coach Courtney Kennedy, both former members of the US Olympic team.
WHERE ARE THEY NOW?
Dr. Sean Lucan (HHS' 92) was a diver. After leaving Hamden he went to the University of Pennsylvania and the Yale School of Medicine where he earned an M.D. and Masters in Public Health. He then went back to Penn for residency, and is currently a Robert Woods Clinical Scholar
Lucan is presently married to Danielle Bocchino, also a Penn and Yale graduate.
The couple greeted a baby boy named Maxwell Jacob born on August 4, 2008. They live in Narberth, Pennsylvania.
